Wye Oak has announced new album Tween is now available on digital platforms, and physical copies will be available on August 5, 2016.
The eight songs featured on Tween are reportedly songs that were abandoned during 2011-2014. The time period in which Wye Oak’s albums Civilian, and Shriek were created.
Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack, who make up Wye Oak, describe the album as “not emblematic of a step forward, but a step sideways in time”. To explain, the two members don’t see these songs as being their 5th album, but as an extra for their fans. For good reason too, because sticking these songs into Civilian or Shriek wouldn’t have meshed well and could have deterred the great sound that was achieved in each previous album.
Wye Oak has also included a new video for “Watching the Waiting”, which can be viewed (below). Wasner has also given us some insight into the meaning of the song stating, “This song is about learning how to understand and accept who I truly am, and present myself more honestly to the world, without any illusions or pretense. The truth is in the mirror, but it is also much, much deeper”. The video was co-directed by Ashley North Compton and Michael Patrick O’Leary, with editing by Owen Lang. The video was shot in Baltimore, MD and Compton talked about the inspiration behind it, “The mirror-hair girl—inspired somewhat by the Sutherland sisters, and the concept of external-internal individuation and connection—first originated as a painting and was brought to life to emulate the song’s momentum and drive.”
Wye Oak is currently in the second month of their summer tour ( below).
