KCRW and the Annenberg Foundation have revealed the lineup for the 2016 Sound in Focus series – a set of free concerts in Century City.
The series will begin July 9, with a set that includes Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. The band has become reknown for their folksy pop songs, such as “Home” and “Man on Fire”. KCRW Music Director Jason Bentley and Souther-Algerian band Imarhan will make appearances.
The series continues one week later on July 16 with a lineup to be announced.
Sound in Focus concludes July 23 with a performance from the politically driven social disruptor, Nas. The hip-hop star has been producing music since he recorded 1994’s Illmatic as a teenager. He recently released his tenth album Life Is Good. Wild Belle and DJ Garth Trinidad will additionally make appearances throughout the day.
In a public press released, Jason Bentley discussed the evolution of Sound in Focus.
In just a few, short years, Sound in Focus has evolved into the crown jewel of our free summer programs – transforming Century Park into a vibrant space for the community to engage in music and the art of photography… From any vantage point, I find myself marveling at the wonders of human engineering. The setting feels very futuristic. As people stream into the green space with blankets and family in tow, curious minds explore the space, settling in to enjoy an evening of live music and the adjacent photo galleries.
Century Park in Century City is known to many as the home of the Annenberg Space for Photography, a space that hosts photography exhibitions, both digital and print. The space will be transformed to host the series of events.
The Annenberg Foundation has been supporting nonprofit organizations in and out of the United States since 1989. The causes it has supported includes education, youth development, arts, humanities, health, and environmental issues. Festivalgoers will be provided with the opportunity to support refugees by supporting the #WithRefugees petition in-person or online. The petition is to be sent to UN headquarters in September and demands world leaders to take again in aiding the current refugee crisis.
Admission is free but competitive; RSVP is required and still does not guarantee admission, which is also first-come, first-serve. Advanced registration can be found at KCRW.com/soundinfocus for each of the shows.
