Legendary hip-hop band The Roots and alt-country act Drive-By Truckers have been announced as the headliners of New York City’s Lowdown Hudson Music Fest, a free annual festival located at Brookfield Place Waterfront on the Hudson River.
Opening the show on July 12 will be Brooklyn Afrobeat group Antibalas. The band will bring their funky, rebellious sound, often attributed to the influence of the likes of Nigerian multi-instrumentalist Fela Kuti and Nuyorican musician Eddie Palmieri.
The Roots have led a long and successful career that has rendered them legends in the eyes of many respected musicians and fans alike. Led by Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter and Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, the group has gained notoriety for their creative approach that combines hip-hop with jazz. They have released 10 studio albums, 2 EP’s collaborated with countless artists and received much critical acclaim. They have spent the past 7 years as the house band for The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
Nashville singer-songwriter Rayland Baxter will contribute his story-telling approach to his music to Lowdown. He is a self-taught multi-instrumentalist, which has led him to achieve successes in the country-blues sphere with his music that combines elements of folk, bluegrass, gospel, soul, Americana, and blues.
The Drive-By Truckers will close the show. The alt-country rockers are best known for “Goddam Lonely Love” and “Outfit,” along with other tracks that include political, historical, and personal themes in their songwriting.
Perhaps the biggest draw to the event is that it is free of charge. Lowdown Hudson will take place July 12 & 13, and does not require tickets for entry. Check out the full lineup below.
