Speedy Ortiz is keeping their Foil Deer follow-up – titled Foiled Again – short and simple, promising only 4 tracks: two outtakes from their 2015 record and two “Puffer” remixes. Ortiz has been gradually releasing the forthcoming EP throughout the month. A few weeks ago, we were introduced to “Death Note.” Shortly thereafter we heard “Emma O,“ along with a Lazerbeak remix of “Puffer.”
According to Pitchfork, Ortiz has released the second “Puffer” remix with the help of Open Mike Eagle. Check out the freshly released mix below via Spotify.
“Puffer” has brought Ortiz buzz from fans and critics, specifically for its lyrics. The song challenges complacency during times when life is going well. Dupuis posits that someone is always struggling and it is worth forgoing the “perfect life” to support another’s struggle. These types of perspectives have brought attention to the band throughout 2015.
The song, however, is only one of many Speedy Ortiz releases that has earned universal praise from music critics. The band has received plaudits for their consistently refreshing approach to songwriting that challenges the status quo and promotes empowerment, especially to women. Named artist of the year by Noisey, the publication had much to say about the band.
Speedy Ortiz is a band made up of people being people in this world. They’re not aiming to get famous, they’re not necessarily seeking out high profile record deals, and they’re not looking to sell out arenas… Speedy Ortiz challenge gender roles and reputations in a world dominated by all-male bands singing songs about how messed up and sad they are. They exist to give back to their community. They exist to empower you. They exist to make you put your fist in the air. The band embodies what the genre of punk rock started out as—powerful guitars and a dominant stage presence—but have also brought along the bold message that no matter who you are or what you’re feeling, you’re OK.
Ortiz is currently on tour with Hop Along and The Good Life. They will release their upcoming EP while on the road on June 3 via Carpark records.
