Versatile is the Best Style
To call this Minneapolis-based artist just a hip-hop artist is an understatement; he is an artist that spans genres. Astronautalis mixes different genres like orchestral pop, punk rock and even some band jazz.
Astronautalis has a new album, Cut The Body Loose, which is available to stream on Soundcloud on May 13th. Astronautalis, whose real name is Andy Bothwell, has jumped around to different record labels over the last five years trying to see where he fits in. Bothwell settled with the label Rhymesayers. Cut The Body Loose is his first record released in five years.
Opening up with his song “ Kurt Kobain” really sets the mood for how versatile his music is throughout the entire album. “Kurt Kobain” showed how he could deliver his lyrics. “Running Away From God” shows he can spit a few rhymes. His vivid ideas within the different sounds throughout his album set him apart from being ‘just another rapper.’
The first song he released to the public was “SIKE!” and it’s probably his most hip-hop influenced song on the album or ever in actuality. The beat to the song is perfect to have in a car with some good bass; it’s obnoxiously loud with an industrial influence. In general this is his most hip-hop influenced album that he’s ever made. There are a few songs that break the pattern of the southern hip-hop style that he developed.
The contrast of songs on the album is like “ Forest Fire,” which is more of an emotional track. Another twist to the album is “Attilia Ambrus,” a track that has a jazzy sound with lots of horns. Hip-hop fans can enjoy Astronautalis because his delivery is different on each song. People who appreciate a versatile artist will enjoy listening to Cut The Body Loose.
