The Flaming Lips Make an Appearance in New X-Men Comic

The Marvel company is proving yet again it can easily associate anything into their universe. The company has found a way to include popular bands into their comics. Hip-hop duo, Run the Jewels, has had their gun-and-fist logo/hand sign grace the cover of Howard the Duck #2 and Deadpool #45. The idea came to Marvel editor-in-chief Alex Alonso while watching his son’s football game, and from the Tag the Jewels graffiti project. “It got me thinking,” said Alonso, “If you’ve got this movement around the world from Bangladesh to Taiwan, people are doing their interpretations of this logo, and I got these roughnecks doing it on the sideline of football game…maybe Marvel could weigh in on this and have some fun.”

Marvel isn’t going to stop with just the two covers, writer Chris Sims has decided to include own homage to a band in the upcoming X-Men ’92.

The Flaming Lips will make a guest appearance in the comic, that is set to be released in August. Sims, co-writer of the comic said, “It really started with us joking about the kind of stunts they’d pull in comics in the ’90s.” From this simple statement, the idea really began to come to life. Sims and fellow co-writer Chad Bowers, wanted to feature actual celebrity guests, much like they did in the early-’90s comics.

The Flaming Lips aren’t the only band to appear, The Toadies also make a special appearance. “The Flaming Lips and The Toadies are two of my favorite bands,” said Bowers. This is just one of the reasons why he chose to include them in this issue. He also stated the bands had a profound influence on his musical taste as he got older. “Getting to reference not just the bands, but the music and what those songs meant to use is pretty surreal…”Bowers went on to say.
