Canadian singer Grimes releases new video entitled, “California,” single off her fourth studio album, Art Angels (2015). The music video is subtly macabre yet also quirky and pop-esque. It is essentially shot in three settings, a Warholian-hued basketball court, a country-blues bar, and a pottery studio. The chorus of the tune is, “And when the ocean rises up above the ground / maybe I’ll drown in / California… you only like me when you think I’m looking sad.” The song and the video as an extension of that, attempts to understand commercialization of artists, and is a sort of reckoning with that. “When you get bored of me I’ll be back on the shelf.” This album released last November, included collaborations with Janelle Monae and Aristophanes. Grimes is currently touring with its content, having recently done Coachella and lit up The Tonight Show in Neon. She will be performing in Philadelphia at the Electric Factory on 6/3.
