Goldenvoice has officially announced the birth of Desert Trip Festival. Dubbed as “Oldchella,” a nickname that will likely stick, the event will host a slew of 60’s and 70’s rock Gods, such as The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, The Who, and Roger Waters. The event will take place at Empire Polo Club in Indio, CA, the venue known for hosting Coachella Festival.
Goldenvoice anticipated a big turnout; they planned a second weekend for the event. Round 1 will take place October 7 – 9, Round 2 will happen October 14 -16. Ticket prices range from $199 for a single day pass to $1,599 for a 3-day reserved grandstand/standing pit pass. While some fans were skeptical of the high prices and believed Golden Voice miscalculated how far their audience would travel for the event, they were immediately proven wrong – admission passes for both weekends sold out within hours.
Fans were less than pleased with the quick sell out, and many speculated that scalpers were behind the small window of opportunity to purchase tickets – this has been an issue with several other large acts this year, such as Radiohead and Adele.
The festival website used a system that queued visitors on a virtual waiting list for an opportunity to buy tickets. When they reached the front of the line, fans has 1o minutes to buy passes. The system faced some criticism for moving too slowly.
Some fans were more patient than others.
