American indie rock band Yeah Yeah Yeahs have been on a hiatus since December 2014, but they recently got together at NYC’s Dream Hotel to play at an afterparty, which was celebrating the premiere of the new documentary Shot! The Psycho-Spiritual Mantra of Rock from rock photographer Mike Rock. Because Rock’s photos have been on the cover of Lou Reed’s album Transformer and Rock served as Bowie’s official photographer in the 1970s, Yeah Yeah Yeahs covered the two musicians with Bowie’s “Moonage Daydream” and Reed’s “Perfect Day.” The band teamed up with TV On The Radio’s Jaleel Bunton and keyboardist Money Mark to perform the covers.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs have been around since their formation in NYC in 2000, and their band name is taken from modern New York City vernacular. The band plays under several different genres, including garage punk, art punk, dance-punk, and post-punk revival. They have released four studio albums so far and have bene nominated for three Grammy awards. Their second studio album, Show Your Bones (2006) was named the second best album of the year by NME.
In April of 2013, Yeah Yeah Yeahs released their fourth studio album Mosquito which led to a brief hiatus in December 2014. The band mainly took a hiatus just to wait for when they truly felt ready to create new music together, and it seems the band may be moving out of hiatus into hopefully some new music. The band’s musical style is typically described as art-rock, edgy post-punk, and even dance floor-friendly racket. Find a review of Mosquito here.
