Brian Eno, the ambient experimental rock artist has just released a cover of “Fickle Sun (iii) I’m Set Free” by the Velvet Underground.
Eno’s cover of the song takes cues from his own music. It’s at a slower tempo and includes Eno’s signature art rock sound. In a press release, he recounts how much the Velvet Underground and the song itself meant to him as a developing musician. He says that the introduction of Velvet Underground into his life allowed him to settle the internal dispute he had with himself about choosing whether to go into art or music. As Eno states, “when I heard The Velvet Underground I thought, “you can do both actually”. It was a big moment for me.”
The song is part of his forthcoming record The Ship, which is to be released April 29, 2016 via Warp records. It will be his first release since 2012 when he release LUX, the grammy nominated album. The album will run at just shy of 50 minutes, and will be released in various mediums including digitally, LP, CD and Limited Edition LPs and CDs.
Brian Eno was born in Suffolk, England and studied art. He later went on to make music as a part of Roxy Music. Subsequently, Eno went on to do solo work and collaborated with other famous groundbreaking musicians such as David Bowie and David Byrne.
So far, Eno has seventeen studio albums, with several more ambient installation albums, collaboration albums, and EPs. In addition, he’s produced albums for several bands and musicians including John Cale and Talking Heads.
