Not more than a few hours after he teamed up with Jhené Aiko to perform “Diamonds and Pearls,” alternative R&B sensation and overall Coachella standout Gallant made a second appearance to pay tribute to the legendary singer. This time he joined the set of Sufjan Stevens to perform one of Prince’s most beloved works, “Purple Rain.” Not everyone can perform a song of such emotional magnitude without coming off as cheesy. But if there is a man to do it, surely it is the young, up-and-coming vocalist from Maryland. With Sufjan on guitar, Gallant belted out one of the best pop songs ever written.
“Purple Rain” shares a name with Prince’s sixth studio album as well as his film debut. The album has gone on to be considered one of the most important releases of the modern music era, influences artists from genres as varied as punk rock to electronic-pop. A slow burning track, it culminates in one of the most memorable and emotional choruses that have ever been put to tape. Of course, the also vocally-blessed Stevens lended some background vocals during the chorus.
