The Kills are ready to drop their new album Ash & Ice in June. They’re been holding their audience over with single “Doing It to Death” and shared a video for “Heart of a Dog,” both will be featured on the forthcoming album. The latter has been featured on the band’s tour and was played this week in their Coachella set.
“I get lost/but I always come around” says Alison Mosshart on the track. The song is a pledge of loyalty, and could be referring to a relationship, friendship, or the band’s relationship to its fans. The video features Mosshart and Jamie Hince palling around Los Angeles. The two seem to have a blast – they hang out in a house, rock out poolside, joyride in an expensive-looking car, and chill with a dog. Mosshart effortlessly does backflips, just because. The Kills formed in 2000 and have gained critical acclaim for their first four albums. The pair created pared down, minimalistic music and rejected offers from record labels that suggest different creative directions for the band. Eventually, the band worked with Domino Records an Dim Mak Record in the US. They cite an eclectic assortment of influences, but many have compared their sound to the White Stripes for their lo-fo rock sound.
The band is taking a new direction for the next release, however. Mosshart has been working on Ash & Ice for over 2 years and the band has spent much of the time searching for a new sound. Says Mosshart of the album (via NME), “You never know what’s going to happen with a record when you’re writing. – says Alison – It could be done all of a sudden in two months, or it could take another year. You get on these tangents, and you find new directions. You kind of follow the scent wherever it’s taking you. Sometimes it takes a long time. Sometimes it’s fast as hell.”
The band is on tour, and recently performed a well-received set at Day 1 of Coachella.
