Last year, Jamie Hewlett and Damon Albarn talked about the return of Gorillaz, where Albarn said the group was set to begin recording in September. Hewlett posted a pair of videos on Instagram today that showed him and Hewlett working in the studio.
Unfortunately, the videos are without sound so we cannot tell if there’s new material or not. The first video Hewlett posted features Albarn working alongside legendary French composer Jean Michel-Jarre, producer Twilite Tone, and singer-songwriter Liam Bailey.
Albarn previously confirmed that he will begin recording the album in September.
“Meanwhile, Los Angeles-based stop-motion animation/sound production studio Open The Portal has teased a Gorillaz collaboration,” according to Consequence of Sound.
The Instagram video posted below was released earlier this month in celebration of Albarn’s birthday. The caption reads: “Here’s a sneak preview of a stop motion, paper cutout 2D puppet of Gorillaz singer 2-D we’re working on for a secret project.”
Hewlett continued to post pictures of the band’s cartoon characters on his Instagram.
The upcoming album will be the group’s fifth overall, and the first since their 2011 release, The Fall, which according to Consequence of Sound, was an LP recorded via iPad. Their last studio album, Plastic Beach, was released in 2010.
Both Albarn and Hewlett focused on their side projects while on their hiatus. Albarn focused on his group, Blur, while Hewlett’s artwork flourished.
