The socially controversial M.I.A. has given birth to her latest song, a collaboration with Swedish fashion company H&M. The Sri Lankan artist penned and recorded “Rewear It” and shared the track in video format via Vogue.
It may come as a surprise that that singer is working with such a large corporation. However, the intentions behind the collaboration align with the singer’s political ideologies. The partnership with M.I.A. aligns with the fashion giant’s effort to bring attention to climate change for H&M’s World Recycle Week initiative, which has set a goal of collecting and recycling 1,000 tons of clothing from customers. The store has incentivized customers to donate in exchange for H&M store credit. The video for “Rewear It” features M.I.A. standing atop mountains of clothes with dancers from around the world.
M.I.A. has a history of creating music with a social message. We’ve seen this from previous releases “Borders”, “MIA OLA”, and “Foreign Friend”.
The singer is also known for recording her videos around the world and calls this video “pretty global”. This one features clips in Iceland, Senegal, and America among the number of nations used for filming locations.
The socially conscious singer is working with Skrillex on her next full-length album, Matahdatah, but never announced whether the new song will be featured on the album. Check out the music video below.
