MINISTRY frontman Al Jourgensen’s new project, SURGICAL METH MACHINE, has just released a new song off their upcoming self-titled debut. The song is called “I Don’t Wanna,” and features former Dead Kennedys lead singer Jello Biafra.
“I Don’t Wanna” is a rather sleazy song that repeatedly states “I don’t wanna be a rock star/I just wanna get paid.” The lyrics are crude, humorous, and clearly mocking the current state of the music industry. However, it features guitar riffs that you can’t help but head bang along to and a killer finish that polishes the track off nicely. “I Don’t Wanna” is much heavier than the last single released off the upcoming album, “I’m Invisible,” a mellow track with a sense of mystery. This along with the collaboration with Biafra likely means that the album will feature a wide variety of musical styles.
The upcoming album is very meaningful to Jourgensen, as he initially thought he was finished with music after the death of fellow band member and best friend Mikey Scaccia from last project MINISTRY.“I just figured, like, nah, it’s time to quit. I don’t want to have John Bonham’s kid playing drums for us and having replacement parts forever; that’s just not my scene. So I just figured, ‘All right, let’s stop this. Let’s do some other stuff.’ And not only that. I found that it was really unburdensome to not have the MINISTRY moniker or expectations and just do something like whatever the fuck we want. I mean, the band’s name is SURGICAL METH MACHINE. It’s not like we’re gonna be on Top 40 radio and on ‘The Voice’ and ‘American Idol.’”
Jourgensen is known for his fierce work ethic, numerous side projects and collaborations, and Biafra is no different. In recent months, Biafra has collaborated with Teenage Time Killers on the song “Ode to Sean Hannity,” as well as performed with his new band, Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School of Medicine.
