Thursday March 31st was a night to remember for all David Bowie lovers who were fortunate enough to attend a one of a kind event. In January, just hours before the Death of David Bowie was announced, the 13th annual music education fundraiser at NYC’s Carnegie Hall, was publicized. Within the following days and months, those involved in the event decided to add even more significance to the event than it already had.
As musicians and friends of Bowie started to collaborate and more people got involved in the creation of the event, another night had to be added to the concert in order to seat the demands of the event. Thousands more ticket seekers were hoping to attend this years fundraiser, and as result, the second night was added to take place on April 1st at Radio City Music Hall. There are reports that the Westboro Baptist church was found protesting outside of the event, said Stereogum.
Twenty-three different bands played in honor of David Bowie on March 31st. They all picked songs from his early years, with exception to the Pixies who played “Cactus”– a song that was originally theres but later gained additional fame through his cover, reported Pitchfork.
The crowd was ecstatic, as every musician gave their heart and soul to each five-fifteen minute set. A multitude of Instagram videos were published as well as countless youtube clips of the event. It was indeed a night to remember in music history.
Famous bands that payed tribute include The Flaming Lips, J Mascis and Cat Power, but a full set list can be seen below. The only exception is the band The Roots, as they unexpectedly had to cancel their set the day before.
