New York indie rock outfit DIIV has decided to forgo the second half of their European tour due to an urgent medical problem.
The band, who were coming off a string of UK appearances, were scheduled to play Liverpool venue Arts Club on 3/27 were forced to cancel at the last minute. News of the rest of the European stops being cancelled came via the Arts Club facebook page.
The group were touring around their sophomore LP Is The Is Are, in February. The album, which the band describes as “darker” than their old material, includes feature from lead singer Zachary Cole Smith’s girlfriend Sky Ferreira.
The abrupt cancellation and Smith’s recent demeanor on stage have led many to believe that this is a drug related incident. Smith’s struggle with drugs has been well documented over the years. He has been very upfront about his addiction to heroin and subsequent recovery. Smith was arrested, along with his girlfriend Ferreira in September of 2013 on drug possession charges. 42 stacks of heroin were found in the couples car. Neither served time for the offense.
There is no word on whether the band’s North America appearances, which begin in may, will still happen.
Let’s hope that all is well for everyone in the band and that they are able to get on stage again soon.
