The Minneapolis based rap group, Atmosphere, has just released a new song. The fresh track is entitled “Trying to Fly.”

The song is a little slower and smoother than the rest of Atmosphere’s catalog. It starts off with an entrancing and sharp note. Slowly, the rest of the beat comes forward, grabbing the listener and keeping them in a very serene state. Soon after this, Slug’s signature voice kicks in.

The song also features a guest artist. Sharing the track is Eric Mayson, a hip-hop artist and producer also from Minneapolis. His contribution to the song is actually a really valuable one. As Mayson sings his lyrics, they come out just a little scratchy, giving the song an added edge.

The lyrics and the track itself are moody and introspective. These themes are nothing new to Atmosphere’s songs, but this song in particular is especially moody. By the end, emotions are running high and the music builds up to that, until it abruptly ends at a high peak.

“Trying to Fly” is one of their most recent releases since their 2014 album Southsiders.

Atmosphere is composed of rapper Slug, also known as Sean Daley, and producer Ant, also known as Anthony Davis. The duo formed in Minneapolis in 1989. Their first studio album, Overcast! was released in 1997. Since then, the rap duo have released eight studio albums and several more EPs.

Towards the end of 2015, Atmosphere came out with another track, “This Lonely Rose.” The song featured underground rappers Aesop Rock and Blueprint. Apart from making new music, Atmosphere are also set to tour around the country, with one stop being at Soundset music festival in Minnesota.
