Maximum Effort
For the newly released movie, Deadpool, artist and composer Junkie XL was brought on to compose for the film. While he has worked on his own independent albums, Junkie XL has marked his place within the realm of video game and film compositions such as his collaboration with Hans Zimmer for The Dark Knight Rises and being the primary composer for Mad Max: Fury Road. With experience and diversity backing him, the choice for the composer for Deadpool must have been an easy one.
The difficulty in creating music for a movie or a video game comes from trying to create interesting songs that are able to have creativity and depth to them, but so much that the music detracts and distracts from the content on the screen. Junkie XL finds a perfect balance in his creation for Deadpool. His music captures the moods of the film and as the movie goes through its paces through the “reluctant hero” arc, the soundtrack effortlessly follows along from its openers “Maximum Effort” to capture the high pace action to the low difficult points where songs like “Liam Neeson Nightmares” and “Back to Life” emphasize the struggle.
Most importantly, though, Junkie XL completely captured Deadpool’s character within his music. Deadpool himself is a unique superhero that viewers have not had the chance to meet yet and, therefore, warrants unique musical choices which are featured in songs like “Twelve Bullets” and “Man in a Red Suit.” Both songs have that overall superhero sound that most have become familiar with from the many superhero movies that have come before, but they also have odd and unique moments and, above all else, the defining attribute of Deadpool, a showmanship, and swagger like quality to those songs. The Deadpool Soundtrack is another easy win for Junkie XL as he continues to reign within his realm.
