On April 3, John Cale, one of the founding members of the Velvet Underground, is set to perform the Velvet Underground’s debut album The Velvet Underground & Nico at the Philharmonie de Paris. As Pitchfork notes, Cale has just released the list of musicians who will play with him in next month’s performance. These special musical guests include the experimental band Animal Collective, The Libertines’ Pete Doherty and Carl Barât, Lemon Jelly’s Nick Franglen, Etienne Daho, Mark Lanegan, and Lou Doillon.
With the eclectic group of guests, the performance is sure to be a beautiful one. In addition, the Philharmonie de Paris will be presenting an exhibit on the Velvet Underground to go with the performance.
The Velvet Underground’s debut album, The Velvet Underground & Nico was released in 1967 and proved to be a revolutionary album and continues to be lauded by critics and audiences alike.
The Velvet Underground formed in 1963 with founding members Lou Reed, John Cale, Maureen “Moe” Tucker, and Sterling Morrison. They were very prominent in the New York City music scene in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Though the band dissolved by 1973, their popularity and importance has increased significantly. Its members went on to produce fantastic music as solo artists and have worked on several other musical projects. In late 2013, Lou Reed sadly passed away, but remains as one of rock’s trailblazers.
After the Velvet Underground, John Cale went on to work on other projects as a solo artist. He has collaborated with numerous artists, such as Happy Mondays, LCD Soundsystem, and Brian Eno. Earlier this year, Cale released his new record entitled, M:FANS, an album inspired heavily by the loss of Lou Reed.
