Odd Nosdam – Sisters

Slow Burn

Sisters is the latest album to come from underground beats artist Odd Nosdam. This is the first album to come after 7 years of solo work silence.

“Bow They Will ! ! !” starts Sisters with slow regal march beat that layers on textures to help set up a psychedelic disoriented vibe. This pours into “Profane Bong Sue” which mellows out in sound to have an easy going dreamlike sound with various echoes coming together to enhance the moving textures throughout. The songs on Sisters keep true to this basic formula, as each one melts into the next and rises and falls with the introduction of layered textured sounds. Two songs do manage to break this mold: “String Day So Free ! ! !” which has its stark difference in the fact that the beat picks a lot more and sounds almost whimsical compared to the rest of the album with its sleigh bells and video game pinball sounds, and “Endless 432,” a collaborative project with Teebs that a beautiful ease to it that induces relaxation.

Overall, Sisters is at best a good relaxing album. It is able to create some emotional response though it is hard to pinpoint what that response is or where it is being created. In a way, this is almost like how the textures are moving through each song; they are there but before they can be truly identified they move in the background. Every song follows a basic sound formula, though, with the only changes in each one being the minor sound bites being layered. In the end, this just results in an album where the songs are not distinct from one another. There is something not quite there, and for an almost decade wait Sisters seems uninspired and a bit of a disappointment.
