Folk artists Neko Case, k.d. lang, and Laura Veirs joined forces to launch a collaborative LP entitled case/lang/veirs. According to Consequence of Sound, the supergroup of singer-songwriters also revealed the upcoming record’s layered opening track, “Atomic Number”. The gentle single incorporates the evocative melodies of guitar and violin intermingling with the musing vocals.
Neko Case is an indie rock artist recognized for both her solo career as a top-tier songwriter and her participation in the Canadian group The New Pornographers. Case recently announced a run of North American tour dates after release of The New Pornographer’s album Brill Bruisers in June 2014.
Kathryn Dawn Lang, known by her stage name k.d. lang, is a Grammy-winning Canadian singer-songwriter who explores the depth and intersection of country, folk, and pop. Portland-based Laura Veirs embodies the evolution of the song craft with her genre-fusing artistry and lyricism.
The three were first drawn together when lang contacted the Case and Veirs with an unexpected email. Though the women did not have personal relationships then, lang suggested they create a record together. “She lit the flare,” Case explained in a press release. “She shot it into the air and we said, ‘Let’s do this.’ Laura and I both responded immediately. There was no question.”
The powerful fourteen-track project was inspired by “a supermoon, the tumbledown story of 70s singer Judee Sill, and the ‘best kept secret’ in Silver Lake.” It was recorded over two years by producer Tucker Martine in Portland, Oregon.
The new trio album, unveiled on June 17, is accompanied by an extensive North American tour that kicks off in San Diego and concludes in Winnipeg. During the two-month jaunt, Case, lang, and Veirs will also appear at the Newport Folk Festival on July 22 and at New Jersey’s XPoNential Music Festival on July 24.
