Beth Orton will be releasing her new album, Kidsticks, May 27 of this year. Beth went back to her roots, as the famous line would be used appropriately, to produce a sound and an album that follows the transitions the musician has done throughout her life.
Beth Orton moved to California a couple of years ago. She began to experiment with electronic loops, which ultimately led to the creation of her new album. Releasing the single “Moon” from the upcoming album shows the wide-open nature of Los Angeles and the captured spirit of earlier recording sessions of Orton herself. It is truly a stunning piece of a sankofa, go back into the past and fetch it. A sanfoka is more than just a word, it is a symbol of retrieving or looking back onto something pleasant or important in one’s life. Sanfoka comes from the the Twi language in Ghana and is often depicted with a bird looking back for its nest or a heart. This album is reflective of fetching something from the past to recycle and remake for a future and promising new sound, hence why the newest album by Orton is her own personal Sankofa.
Kidsticks was co-produced between Orton and Andrew Hung from Fuck Buttons. The mixing was done by David Wrench from bands Caribou and Hot Chip. The album captures the glee and happiness Beth has found in her new life among the sandy shores of the California coast. It is a more vivid and alluring experience compared to the shores and rainy weather of her English homeland. Although the musician could be remembering what it was like to grow up in its cold and bitter weather and enjoy the English home life, this album is an affect of her move to California and her reason to love and embrace the life that she chooses to follow.
Beth Orton has not announced any tour dates as of yet, but she will be performing in a couple of festivals that will be going on throughout the summer.
