Lorde covered David Bowie’s “Life on Mars” as a tribute performance during the Brit Awards at London’s 02 Arena.
Last night was the annual Brit Awards and the stand out performance of the night has to go to Lorde for her tribute to the late David Bowie. Lorde honored Bowie by covering his “Life on Mars” with support of the late artist’s backing band. The show that Lorde put on was full of emotion and an obvious respect for Bowie by the artist. While no one can fill the shoes of Bowie there are those that are talented enough to at least pay homage to the man and Lorde has shown that she is one of them. The tribute was immediately followed up by Duncan Jones,’ Bowie’s son, tweet that read, “Finally found the links to tonight’s Brits. Just… beautiful. Thank you.” This is an absolute contrast to the immediate back lash he gave Lady Gaga’s Grammy tribute just about week prior. According to NME, He wrote this of Gaga’s performance, ‘Overexcited or irrational, typically as a result of infatuation or excessive enthusiasm; mentally confused.’ Damn it! Bowie was honored with a posthumous Brits Icon Award during this year’s ceremony and friend/actor Gary Oldman was there to accept. Oldman has many different positive words of praise to speak on behalf of Bowie such as his positive outlook on life and his impact on music and the creative world. He also said this of Bowie’s take on his Cancer, “I can share with you that he faced his illness with immense courage, dignity, grace and customary humor, even in dire circumstances. When he wrote to tell me the bad news he had cancer, he said: ‘The good news is I’ve got my cheekbones back’.” Eurthymics singer Annie Lennox was the one to introduce the award.
