Massive Attack delivered new music yesterday through an interactive app called Fantom and teased fans over Instagram, posting a vinyl sleeve hinting at a new EP release from the band.
The app is a “sensory music player” that remixes pieces of music based on the user’s heartbeat, location, local time, and movement. The technology is interesting and strange altogether, and it was developed by several people including the band’s Robert del Naja. However, the most enticing part of the app release is the presence of four new Massive Attack tracks: “Dead Editors,” “Ritual Spirit,” “Voodoo in My Blood,” and “Take It There.”
Fans are not able to hear any of the tracks fully yet, but through the app you can hear warped slices of all four songs by moving around, positioning your camera in various angles, and using it at different times of the day. Lastly, the app allows users to capture clips of the “remixes” and create and share them as videos.
As for the Instagram teaser, sources believe it indicates that fans will soon be able to hear the original masters of the songs on a physical release.
Massive Attack and member Robert Del Naja, aka 3D, posted an image that appears to look like the back of a vinyl sleeve for an EP titled Ritual Spirit. The tracklist features all four tracks featured on Fantom; in addition, it includes the artists featured on each track. Azekel guests on the title track, “Voodoo In My Blood” Young Fathers, “Take It There” features Tricky, and “Dead Editors” has vocals from Roots Manuva.
