Wild Nothing has released the third single and title track from their forthcoming LP Life of Pause. “Life of Pause” follows recently released singles “Reichpop” and “To Know You/TV Queen.”
Life of Pause will be released February 19th on Captured Tracks in the United States and Bella Union in the UK / Europe.
The 3:06 long song has just about everything audiences have come to love about the Blacksburg, VA indie pop band: swirling guitars and synthesizers, sugary-sweet vocals, romanticized lyrics, layered atmospherics and an abundance of hooks that get stuck in your head.
“I allowed myself to go down every route I could imagine even if it ended up not working for me,” he says. “I owe it to myself to take as many risks as possible. Songs are songs and you have to allow yourself to be open to everything.”
The Jack Tatum-led band’s previous two full-length studio albums, 2010’s debut record Gemini and 2012’s follow-up Nocturne were well-received releases that garnered the band a strong national following. Instead of continuing with the momentum gained by two releases over the course of three years, Jack Tatum and company took their time coming out with a third LP. So far this patience appears to have paid off with each of the singles from Life of Pause expanding upon Wild Nothing’s trademark sound.
During the recording of Life of Pause in Stockholm, Wild Nothing’s Jack Tatum was joined by producer Thom Monahan (Devendra Banhart, Beachwood Sparks), drummer John Ericsson of Peter, Bjorn and John, and veteran of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Pelle Jacobsson, who added marimba and drums. In California, Tatum and Wild Nothing added to the sonic variety of their third full length with Medicine guitarist Brad Laner and a team of saxophonists.
The writing experimentation that Tatum undertook for the creation of Life of Pause certainly resulted in some more abstract song styles, like on “Reichpop.” However, the title track of this album seems to tread ground that will seem very familiar to those that loved Gemini hits like “Chinatown” and “Gemini” or favorites from Nocturne like “Shadow.”
