If the Jackson Five, HAIM and The Maccabees aren’t example enough, the Liebersons are just one more reason why sibling bands don’t get old. Formed by sisters Teeny, Lizzie and Katherine Lieberson along with the non-biological member Boshra Al-Saadi, TEEN just released their newest song “Tokyo” in anticipation of their next album, Love Yes.
The synth-pop track has a swinging beat and peppy melody in the likes of St. Vincent, and — like St. Vincent — has dark lyrics to accompany. It divulges in the story of an older man tired of his wife and fantasizing younger pleasures rather than accepting his own age. Lead vocalist Teeny sings: “Fooling the Madonna, chasing after youthful skin / watching your own age drip, softening your trying limbs.”
“Tokyo” isn’t the first time the quartet has addressed sexism in their lyrics — they released another single from Love Yes, “All About Us,” in December, which features similar feminist undertones. Home to Brooklyn, from where most good things arguably sprout, TEEN released their debut In Limbo in 2012. Since, they released two more albums: The Way and Color in 2014 and Little Doods in 2015. Their next project, Love Yes, is to be expected Feb. 19 on Carpark Records.
TEEN will showcase Love Yes on their East Coast tour, starting on Valentine’s Day at Union Pool in New York, NY and ending 10 days later in New Haven, CT.
