Lyrically Astounding
Bow down to ‘King Pusha,’ also known as Pusha T, because his new album is for all to hear. The former Clipse member has released his second studio-recording album called Darkest Before Dawn. The album was released on December 18th and is lyrically mind-blowing.
This album has a unique lyrical attributes and intriguing experimental production. Some of the main producers on Darkest Before Dawn are Kanye West, J.Cole, Q-Tip, Timbaland and a few others. Pusha is known for his lyrical work in his raps that speak on current events in hip-hop and the news, contrary to the usual content involving the drugs and money combo.
To promote the album, Pusha released a trailer to his short film exclusively to TIDAL back in November. The release of the trailer also let listeners exclusively pre-order three singles from the album on December 11th. The first three singles that King Pusha released were “M.F.T.R.”, “Untouchable” and “Crutches, Crosses and Caskets.”
Just into the intro of the album, Pusha goes hard, making it obvious that this is a tease of what the rest of the album is going to be like.
Pusha T’s passion for music is displayed through his play with words throughout each song. His successful career with Clipse paved the way for his equally buoyant solo career with Kanye West’s record label, G.O.O.D Music. That being said, Pusha T is now the president of West’s label. Again, bow down before King Pusha because he is making ambitious moves in the hip-hop industry.
Pusha’s admiration for the Notorious B.I.G was shown in his song “Untouchable.” Timbaland produced the beat, and it was probably Pusha-T’s best song on the album. Timbaland uses Biggie’s voice for the hook, which gives it more of an old school, hip-hop feel.
“Sunshine” deals with events that are happening in America today saying, “Swore to protect and serve / but who really got the power.” Obviously speaking on the rise in shootings between white cops and African-Americans throughout the country.
Pusha is a fierce lyricist, however, the album is only the prelude to King Push, which is soon to come.
