David Bowie has just released the video for his new song “Lazarus”, and what an intersting and cool video it is.
The video is perfectly matched to the song which shows the softer, darker, and more intimate side of Bowie. In the video which according to Pitchfork was directed by Breaking Bad’s Johan Renck, Bowie is seen lying in a hospital bed helpless and blind with a bandage that covers his eyes. The video features clips of Bowie out of the hospital bed standing dressed in front of a chifforobe-like piece of furniture, singing his emotion out, and at times moving to the song in a very awkward and almost robotic way.
The song is reminiscent of David Bowie’s “Im Deranged” . A bit dark, a bit creepy, yet still holding the fascinating and captivating voice of Bowie that has drawn in fans for decades. It is mellow, yet has parts where the music begins to build, giving it a unique blend of soft and intense. It is Bowie doing what he does best, being one-of-a-kind and wonderful. The track is featured on Bowie’s latest album, Blackstar.
It seems that to be able to direct a video for someone as iconic as Bowie would mean basically reaching the threshhold of awesomeness as far as video directing goes. It seems that video director, Johan Renck, who also directed the title video for the album’s title track feels the same in some capacity. Here is what Renck had to say about his talents being contributed to “Lazarus”:
One could only dream about collaborating with a mind like that; let alone twice. Intuitive, playful, mysterious and profound… I have no desire to do any more videos knowing the process never ever gets as formidable and fulfilling as this was. I’ve basically touched the sun.
The acclaim that Bowie has recieved over his long-spanning career shows no signs of stopping. The cultural icon is welcoming praise-upon-praise for his latest work, and his longevity and impact just goes to show how Bowie’s music and persona will be adored for many, many years to come.
