On Tuesday, legendary songwriter Carole King was paid tribute by multiple performing artists at the Kennedy Center Honors, airing on CBS.
There several highlights throughout the evening, most notably of which came from equally legendary vocalist Aretha Franklin, who gave a rousing, piano-led performance of the King song “You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman.” As per usual, Franklin left the crowd in awe with her signature vocal talents.
Miranda Lambert chipped in with her own version of the Eagles’ ballad, “Desperado”. Lambert performed a version faithful to the original vocally, with instrumental embellishments including hints of strings and additional harmony vocals.
Additionally, Janelle Monae, James Taylor and Sara Bareilles contributed with versions of King-penned songs, “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow,” “One Fine Day”, “Up On The Roof,” and “You’ve Got A Friend”.
King was, and is, the definition of a career songwriter. Over her six-decade-long span, she has written over one-hundred charting pop hits for a variety of artists too long too mention in full. Her mastery of the art of songcraft should serve as an inspiration to modern musicians who are looking to leave their own mark. The ceremony last night was an appreciation of those talents.
