Unknown Mortal Orchestra @ The Fillmore 2/1

Laura, a young woman from Toyko, and a taboo polygamous relationship inspired one of the most critically acclaimed albums of 2015. Ruban Nielson, the creative genius behind Unknown Mortal Orchestra, began work on his album Multi-Love during a polygamous relationship between his wife, Jenny, and Laura. What started as a harmless friendship between Ruban and Laura blossomed into a more serious relationship after conversing online for months after their initial meet. After seeing a photo of Laura, Jenny was in awe at her beauty, Jenny started sending hand-written love letters to this enchanting woman. From there, Laura moved in with the couple and that’s when the concepts behind Multi-Love started coming together.

Ruban’s rise to success was sudden. After releasing FFunny FFiends in 2010, expecting nothing in return, labels were contacting him wanting to hear more of what he’s got. Jenny encouraged Ruban to pursue a career, so Ruban gathered his Portland friends and started creating their first album. A year later, Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s self-titled debut album released and took the music world by a storm.

Three albums in and Unknown Mortal Orchestra has not lost their luster. If anything, they’ve improved. With kaleidoscopic music accentuating the unique central narrative for their new album, experiencing Unknown Mortal Orchestra perform will be a treat. Don’t miss out on seeing Unknown Mortal Orchestra play hits like Can’t Keep Checking My Phone and Multi-Love.
