After nearly two hears of silence, they’re back. Record producer and singer-songwriter Trent Reznor announced the 2016 return of the iconic Nine Inch Nails on Twitter, according to Pitchfork. Through a vague tweet, Reznor delighted fans by revealing that he is working on new music that will be unleashed in 2016.
Acting as the successor to Hesitation Marks, Nine Inch Nail’s ninth studio album is expected to sustain the previous album’s electronic emphasis characterized by ominous minimalism. The 2013 release deviated from the typical angst to rivet on dance rhythms reminiscent of Kraftwerk and Daft Punk.
The industrial rock band’s last album, 2013’s Hesitation Marks, surged to No. 2 on the Billboard 200 as the highest charting Nine Inch Nails album since 2007’s Year Zero. Reznor has since been significantly involved in the launch of Apple Music and the soundtrack for the feature film Gone Girl.
As a multi-instrumentalist and film score composer, Trent Reznor spearheaded the industrial rock project Nine Inch Nails since 1988. In June, Reznor revealed to Rolling Stone that he was working on new tracks:
I’ve been messing around with some things. It’s not for a thing, it’s not a record I’m trying to finish in a month. It’s more just a feeling around in the dark and seeing what sounds interesting. It’s nice to do that every few years to try and reinvent and discover and try to learn about yourself and what feels exciting to you as an artist.
