Singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens has announced plans to re-release his 2005 album Illinois on vinyl to celebrate the album’s 10th anniversary. Though there is no set release date yet, it has been confirmed that the record will be out in early 2016 via Stevens’s label, Asthmatic Kitty.
Pitchfork reports that the release will be limited to 10,000 copies and will come in two colors: Antimatter Blue and Cape White. This is due to the fact that it’s being referred to as “the Blue Marvel Edition” because it features Marvel Comics character Blue Marvel on the cover. The cover art differs slightly from the original with the addition of the superhero, but it was still done by original artist Divya Srinivasan. You can see the new artwork for the front and back of the casing, as well as the vinyl colors, below.
There is also backstory about the cover design provided by Pitchfork: the Blue Marvel is a new superhero, similar to Superman in many ways. Superman is a DC Comic character and Blue Marvel is, of course, a Marvel comic character. The original cover of Stevens’s Illinois album featured Superman, but they ended up removing him later due to worries about copyright infringement and now Marvel can capitalize on the free space for their hero.
Earlier in 2015, Stevens released Carrie & Lowell, his seventh studio album and the follow-up to 2010’s The Age of Adz. He also collaborated with cellist Gaspar Claus on the 2015 One Night Stand album, which features collaborations with number of artists during the 2012 Permanent Festival in Brooklyn, New York. Others featured on that project include The National’s Bryce Dessner, Porcelain Raft’s Mauro Remiddi and The Luyas’ Jessie Stein. Stevens recently wrapped up his fall tour, which covered North America and Europe.
