Berkeley rapper G-Eazy has a very auspicious stage name. It could refer to an idiomatic expression (“be easy, son”), or a more famous emcee (Young Jeezy). It could be a kind of pig Latin of his government name, Gerald Earl Gillum. He says it actually dates back to elementary school. “I went by G.E. as a kid,” the emcee confessed. “I thought my real name was dorky.” It wasn’t long before kids began elongating the “E” part to “Easy.” All he had to do was change one consonant. The handle was pre-ordained.
Arriving on-stage with a pompadour and a leather jacket, G-Eazy became known as “the James Dean of rap”, but his music is much less troubled than that name might imply, having crossed over to the mainstream with his re-interpolation of the rock & roll classic “Runaround Sue.” Born in Oakland, California, G-Eazy launched his career while still in college, heading up a hip-hop crew named the Bay Boyz while dropping his solo debut, The Epidemic LP, in 2009. Two years later, his mixtape The Endless Summer dropped and in 2012 he hit the road with Hoodie Allen and also join the Van’s Warped Tour. In 2014 he returned with the album These Things Happen, which topped the Billboard Hip-Hop/R&B and Top Rap Albums Charts, also earning the #3 spot on the Billboard 200 and the Top Digital Albums Chart. In July 2014, G-Eazy was placed on MTV’s Artists to Watch, following a successful worldwide sold-out tour and his sophomore album When It’s Dark Out which is scheduled to be released on December 4, 2015.
