Veteran rappers Open Mike Eagle and Serengeti, forming the group Cavanaugh, have released a new song, “Typecast”, featuring Busdriver, P.O.S. and Hemlock Ernst, otherwise known as Samuel T. Herring, vocalist of synthpop group Future Islands. This new cut will be featured on the duo’s upcoming concept album Time And Materials.
The narrative behind the song and album is unique to say the least. It involves two maintenance men working on a building that caters to rich and poor residents alike. Through their job they observe the interaction between the social classes and voice complaints about their own domestic lives.
It’s a concept that allows the two veteran artists to think outside the box. The track has a brooding, atmospheric instrumental, complemented by a steady, but near-monotone flow. All together it creates a very industrial sounding song with a lot of replay value.
Open Mike Eagle and Serengeti were both featured on the Doomtree Zoo bill this Summer, and they have released over a dozen albums between them over their careers. This chemistry and experience is sure to make for a thought provoking and entertaining hip-hop album, if this track is any indication.
Time And Materials is due to be released Nov. 19 via Mello Music Group.
