LISTEN: Cave Singers Release New Song “That’s Why”

Indie folk band Cave Singers released their new song “That’s Why” today.

The track will appear on the band’s upcoming fifth album Banshee, off which it serves as the lead single. Banshee is set to release Feb. 19.

Banshee will mark a new achievement in the history of Cave Singers. After previous signings under big labels Matador and Jagjaguwar, the Seattle trio will now self-release the album with funds raised by an IndieGoGo campaign they created.

Cave Singers took a more raw approach to writing the album’s tracks, similar to how they used to create when they first started. Ben Kaye of Consequence of Sound reported the band “is bringing the music back to themselves, retaining complete ownership not only of the rights, but of the sound.”

Kaye described the song:

“That’s Why” opens with a strolling bass that quickly gets swallowed up in the fuzz of a crunchy guitar and the stomp of a simple drum kit. It’s when [singer Pete] Quirk’s instantly recognizable voice slides in that you lose all doubt this is anything but a Cave Singers track. But he has some new tricks up his sleeve as he drops down into his lowest register ever on the bridge. Though the drive may seem rather steady, there’s a cadence throughout that subtly adds some funky textures to the rolling number. It’s the band being who and what they want to be, on their own terms.
