Aleks Grey – Souls

Aleks Grey Is Not Imagine Dragons

If there was one artist that can say, assuredly, that he was influenced by Imagine Dragons, it would be Aleks Grey. The Norwegian born and now Liverpool based musician tailors his music to fans that enjoy dancing to piano heavy rhythms and choruses that require one to belt out the lyrics along with the music. His new EP Souls certainly grasps that mentality.

His lyrics are also remarkably similar to Imagine Dragons in the way that he sings about being alive, enjoying life and all of those good times one shares with his or her friends. The lyrics are generic, but the fast paced keyboards and big drums behind the vocals make them more than tolerable, even a little enjoyable.

There are two things in particular about Grey’s music that captures the listener’s interest, and it is his singing and his presence. While he does sound similar to any Top 40 song out there, his voice is much clearer and decipherable than the slurred dribble of other musicians. There is no detection of a Norwegian accent and he articulates his words with an elocution that sounds better than an average American’s.

The second interesting thing about his music is the presence that he emits. Even though this is not a live recording, one cannot figure out why he sounds down to earth and not superficial on this EP. Perhaps, it is because his music was recorded in a place that seems so far removed from the music industry or maybe it is the fact that after a quick perusal of his website, one notices his genuine interest in his craft and the desire he has to share it with others.

Overall, the sound of Grey’s music is pretty ordinary and perhaps a little unoriginal, but even the most intellectual and non-conformist hipster would find simple pleasure in the happiness that this music brings out of the listener. Is this a record that needs to be downloaded and listened to immediately? No, but it is certainly one that would be best enjoyed at a house party or driving around, with all the windows down, and doing the sprinkler dance move while you laugh and dream of licorice and rainbows with all of your friends.
