Los Angeles’ Deap Vally revealed their new empowering single ‘Royal Jelly’, described by SPIN as “liberally doused in sick solos; it’s all manner of bawdy boss-bitch real talk wrapped up in garage punk brutalism.” Viscid with the duo’s rock ‘n’ roll roots, the gritty track was produced by Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ guitarist Nick Zinner, intended as “a celebration of strong, creative women”.
The song’s accompanying video, directed by Jess Holzworth, features fashion icon Georgia May Jagger and was recorded when drummer/vocalist Julie Edwards was five months pregnant. Lindsey Troy and Julie Edwards state that “it’s a song that takes its time, but the pay-off is great. It’s definitely one of the funkiest songs on our upcoming new record.”

Alongside their 2014 spring tour lighting up the US, Deap Vally headlined San Diego Music Thing and SXSW 2014 in support of their 2013 album of “abrasive, ephemeral garage rock”. Sistrionix, the debut album launched in 2013, garnered critical praise from Rolling Stone, SPIN, NME, and The Guardian, revered for its “garage punk brutalism”. As the Guardian put it, “Like outrageously attired alchemists, they distil rock’n’roll down to its barest essences – thud, snarl, wooh! – and turn it into something precious again.”
