November is finally here. The time of the year that observes Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month, National Novel Writing Month, and the ever so famous “Movember,” also brings along a special treat for Los Angeles residents. As the spirit and fun of Halloween fades, Red Bull Sound Select returns for the second year to bring a month long of concerts and events celebrating music throughout the city. The event known as 30 Days in L.A. brings over 60 artists to venues such as The Echo, The El Rey, Palladium and the Roxy Theater.
The first night of the citywide extravaganza, “Wax on Wax”, took place at the Madame Tussauds Hollywood Celebrity Wax Museum located on the world famous Hollywood Boulevard. The night was a dance party with performances from vinyl record DJs, three floors of entertainment and of course – wax figures.
As guests arrived to the event, they were treated to free food consisting of tacos and other Mexican dishes on a first-come, first-served basis. The line was massive and wrapped from one end of the courtyard to the back. The food was very popular and ran out within the first hour. The only thing remaining was traces of candy presumably left over from Halloween.
An elaborate setup of television sets from the 50’s or 60’s were stacked on one another to create an installation that displayed the names of the various artists performing throughout the 30 Days in L.A. A free open-air photo booth was present for guests to create memories (photos were available online or through text message link). There was even an on-site vinyl pressing station that gave out records of limited Red Bull Sound Select releases.
Vinyl was the theme of the night with booths from local stores (Amoeba Music, Record Store Day, Origami Vinyl and The Record Parlour) selling vinyl records to audiophiles. A vinyl check-in booth was present to stash away treasured finds while hitting the dance floor.
The wax museum itself was decked out with music and lights to offer visitors a unique entertainment experience while touring the museum. For those who have never been to Madame Tussauds, this was the perfect time to do so. There were three floors open for guests and each level offered a different style of music ranging from hip hop to modern jazz to indietronica. Bars were located on each floor to provide the most convenience for attendees.
Many guests smiled and laughed as they took photos with the lifelike wax figures while being entertained by the live DJs. There were some actual celebrity lookalikes wandering the museum and feigning inanimateness to scare onlookers as they wondered whether or not the statue was real.
Although the live entertainment was exclusive to the kick-off of 30 Days in L.A. – residents and visitors of the city should make it a point to check out the museum at least once. There’s never a disappointment in taking in the craftsmanship of the wax figures.
