Baaba Maal, Senegal’s most internationally-known musician, has announced he will be releasing a new album called The Traveller.
The Traveller will be Maal’s 11th album release, set to drop on Jan. 15 via Marathon Artists.
“To all fellow journeymen and women,” Maal said in a press release, “I am sharing with you these sounds, smells, and colors that are so vital from the desert to the savannah and beyond.”
Maal recorded The Traveller in both Senegal and London, while working with producer Johan Hugo. Within the nine new tracks will be a collaboration with Winston Marshall of Mumford & Sons.
According to a press release, the album is a “blend of African roots and more contemporary electronic influences, all beautifully woven together at varying tempos, and carrying different messages for the listener.”
For a preview of the album, Maal has released the track “Gilli Men” as its first single.
Of the album, Maal said:
The Traveller defines how I feel about the planet, that despite its many problems, there is a lot of inspiration, and hope and beauty.
Fans can pre-order the album on iTunes, and each pre-order will come with an instant download of “Gilli Men.”
