The Decemberists have released a new video for their song “Cavalry Captain” from their album What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World.
The Decemberists have just released video for their song “Cavalry Captain.” The video is a spoof on Scientology with their make believe new-age religion known as Decemberism, with Colin Meloy taking the role of L. Ron Hubbard as the Cavalry Captain.
According to Pitchfork, the video is directed by Daniel Kaufman and Meloy offers his followers several different benefits for followers of his new religion. He advertises “joy, pleasure, satisfaction, your family’s love and respect, an end to all those names they call you, alienation from the majority of people, unicorn gifs and 0001110020111111.” The video includes several pokes at Scientology including the money making aspect that came from it offering the collection of Decemberism books for $1,000. They also show the use of what looks like a E-meter in the video, a device made famous by Scientologists to read your electrodermal activity. The video is good fun and shows the bands sense of humor as well as their musical talent. The video can be seen below.
The Decemberism advocates actually take their façade step further and leave a number in the video’s description, (971-23-ALIVE). The number is a line to the Research and Expansion of Decemberism Worldwide and encourages callers to leave a message of whatever their wishes may be. The message grants the caller a text that refers them to the Decemberism website.
