Chance the Rapper is coming to Oakland and there are not enough fire emoji in the world to represent how lit it will be. With three mixtapes to his name, a debut album, a scene-stealing feature on a massive song, and a mixtape with one of the most enigmatic rappers in the game, few artists can say they had as impressive of a year as the 22-year-old Chicago native’s. Since he started breaking out, Chance’s work has been received with massive critical praise thanks to his quick-witted and paced rhymes and his far-reaching appreciation for music of any genre.
“I hope you never get off Friday’s/and that you work at Friday’s that’s always busy on Fridays” is a sample lyric from Chance’s verse on Action Bronson’s “Baby Blue”. The realistic imagery and slick wordplay are a just a sample of Chance’s unique style. His reference points are both relatable and wildly unexpected. One of his earliest popular songs sampled the well-loved theme song from PBS classic “Arthur”, while other tracks pull from acid jazz. He’s on another level of cerebral and taking rap to unexpected places… which brings us to Lil B.
Once a main player in hyphy’s early-2000’s resurgence as a member of The Pack, Lil B has continuously released mixtapes and created a following that is religiously passionate. He’s gained notoriety this year for “cursing” players like James Harden and making appearances on CNN. This summer we were fortunate enough to be gifted a Lil B/Chance the Rapper mixtape, a glorious meeting of two hip-hop minds that show no end to their respective creativity. Since Lil B lives in Oakland, who knows.. there might be a “chance” he’ll make an appearance.
