The New Prom King
Ryan DeRobertis is the man behind Skylar Spence, his newest moniker. Previously, he referred to himself as Saint Pepsi and mostly remixed other voices instead of his own. All of that changed when he signed to a new record label, Carpark. Once there, he decided to ditch Saint Pepsi and go a different route by playing around with different sounds that work best for him as an artist. Prom King is the result of this new experiment. It’s safe to say that this sound is fitting for the DJ.
With Prom King, the 22-year-old DJ has proved that he is definitely full of confidence. On the lead single “Can’t You See,” DeRobertis is fighting hard to get the attention of a girl. He sings the catchy line, “I’m in love with my own reflection,” which certainly sends off a self-confident vibe to anyone who hears it. His singing voice itself isn’t full of range, but his tone itself is very unique and distinguished. Adding on to those infectious lyrics, the music is a fun disco inspired type of track that will easily get stuck in the listener’s head. It’s an addicting type of melody that makes a positive impression for listeners that may be unfamiliar with previous work.
“Fiona Coyne” was a single that Skylar Spence released last year. This song is extremely pop sounding, and sounds as if this was a track that DeRobertis seriously wants to be played on mainstream radio. This is being said because it has a similar sound to several top tracks being heard all over the country. It also sounds like a perfect dance track due to the groovy sound it maintains consistently from start to finish.
The track “Bounce Is Back” is a surprising one that brings together R&B and new wave music in a natural way. He even throws in some violins just for good measure. The track has a fun and easy flow about it that makes you want to dance. This isn’t the only track on Prom King that makes listeners feel this way, but it’s still an easygoing song that has a lot going on in terms of what genres it combines.
Ryan DeRobertis is back with a new identity that is sure to equally shock but also please both old and new fans. With Skylar Spence, he has managed to create an inventive sound that is all his own and is totally separate from what he created in the past. Prom King is an energetic release that will have listeners hanging on for dear life to the little bit of summer that is still left.
