Your New Favorite American-Based Duo
Alex Luciano has pretty much no musical history. Before her first EP, Over Easy, with fellow New Paltz, NY-based Diet Cig band member Noah Bowman, she had picked up an electric guitar just two months before that, and may never have if had not it been for Bowman. Of course, she knew how to play, having had some songs written already with her acoustic before Bowman came into the picture, with no intention of doing anything with them. And because Luciano wrote most of the songs, Bowman doesn’t even really know the words on Over Easy.
But now they’ve given the world two more songs to listen to, putting the total number of songs released by the band at a whopping seven. Sleep Talk / Dinner Date was first released as a 7”, then digitally (“Sleep Talk” came in July and “Dinner Date” came in August), then finally released on vinyl this month.
“If I told you I loved you I don’t know who it would scare away faster,” Luciano repeats in “Sleep Talk” over pop-punk drums and simple, happy guitar chords. Those chords generate more fuzz in “Dinner Date” but contain the same catchy, addicting riffs and lyrics.
“Dinner Date” has an accompanying music video, where the cute-AF Luciano sings straight into the camera in between beating slew of men in arm wrestling matches. And the “Sleep Talk” video portrays Luciano’s young age, which is somewhere around not yet legal US drinking age. And Bowman gets to be the cute-AF one in this video.
Luciano and Bowman’s eyes are wide open, desperately looking for new adventures in their exploration. Already they’ve talked about trying to lure in a different, perhaps more sophisticated crowd, something other than their college fans, which is a totally valid request. But if they asked for some advice it would be that there’s no rush, especially because they are so green. Simply growing up comes with adventures on its own and will come without them ever realizing it. So continue to slay, Diet Cig, and let the growing up/growing out come naturally.
