Little May @ The Independent November 2

Australia is a hotbed of talented new artists with potential for superstar status. Listen to Triple J or Triple J Unearthed radio for a sample of all the good stuff coming from Down Under, and you won’t be disappointed. A trio of three women from Sydney performing as Little May are making waves in the indie-folk scene with a polished and pretty sound. They’ve been selling out their tour all over Australia and are now bringing the act to The Independent on Monday, November 2nd.

Tricky to classify and easy to listen to, Little May easily drifts back and forth through genres. “Hide”, one of their most popular tracks lyrically comes from a raw, honest emotional place that displays vulnerability and anger at once. The context and structure-speaking directly to an ex-lover- remind immediately of a Jagged Little Pill era Alanis Morissette. “Feed me words while you had her between your sheets/
Bet she likes that,” telling us all what we oughta know about this one’s wrongdoing. While the band’s song catalogue is not long, it’s lyrics like these that make them an interesting and worthwhile outfit to listen to.

Musically speaking, the band flirts with haunting, enchanting harmonies and darkly tinted folk melodies. All three members are vocally talented musicians who clearly grew up with CCR and Fleetwood Mac, and aren’t afraid to shape harmonies based on those legendary acts. Like Haim and First Aid Kit, two other all-female bands with classic rock influences, Little May is proving that girls can play too.
