The Melvins and Teri Gender Bender cover “Rebel Girl” by Bikini Kill for “Almost Life From Joyful Noise.”

Joyful Noise Recordings has released its single from their “Almost Live from Joyful Noise” series. This single is a cover of Bikini Kill’s Rebel Girl by a team up of the Melvins and Le Butcherettes’ vocalist Teri Gender Bender. The singles have already sold out but a video, seen below, has been released via Youtube for everyone who has missed out.

King Buzzo and the rest of the Melvins help to add a different take on the original with a change in riffs and their own personal trademark “sludge metal” style. Bender also adds a more amped up attitude to the already in-your-face lyrics of the song. Having already made a name for herself in the punk scene, Bender gives this women rights punk anthem its well-deserved tribute. Any fan of these three bands should be greatly pleased with the level that this cover places itself on.

The “Almost Live from Joyful Noise” will include a series of limited edition singles from a variety of artists. The singles are all recoreded at the Joyful Noise Indianapolis-based performance space. The series will release a new single every month or two, starting with this one.

The Melvins are a band that was formed in 1983 with direct influences from Black Flag and Black Sabbath. The band is said to have been a major influence on the grunge scene and bands such as Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Green River.

Le Butcherettes are a punk band from Mexico that formed in 2007. They gained their popularity through the use of their symbolic stage props and their energetic performances. The props included such things as brooms, feather dusters, bloody aprons and even an actual pigs head to help symbolize women’s oppression and promote women’s rights.
