American singer-songwriter Kelela released a music video for her song, “Rewind.”
The song, “Rewind,” has a feeling of the song being an ‘End-of-Summer-Jam,’ and as such, that quality has translated to the screen with Kelela featured in settings that lean toward the nocturnal with neon lights glowing brightly in the darkened shots that have been captured on camera.
Kelela remains in the front-and-center of the music video, as she dances through a series of locations, such as laser-lit ballrooms and shining stark sterile hallways that are reminiscent of what one might find at a college dormitory.
From a cinematic standpoint, the videographer chose to shoot Kelela’s dance scenes from below her, which is effective for pulling the viewer into the scene almost as if that person were dancing with Kelela. It is an innovative way of drawing the viewer in, because a large majority of music videos are shot from a much more straight on forward facing angle.
Additionally, with Kelela’s dance scenes being shot in various locations, her surroundings almost become a secondary character. These ever changing scenes, along with the hypnotic song itself, create a sensual quality to the music video.
As “Rewind” has that end-of-summer quality to it, the launch of this music video was well planned, since viewers and readers in much of the Northern Hemisphere are beginning to experience that slow side into fall weather and shorter daylight hours that occurs toward the end of September.
“Rewind” is taken from Kelela’s upcoming album, Hallucinogen, which is set to be released on October 9th, 2015, via Cherry Coffee/Warp Records.
