Bakermat @ Mezzanine 11/12

There is little escaping the wave of EDM and house music that has recently become popular in mainstream culture. The Skrillexes, Diplos, and Deadmau5’s that initiated club music’s return to the spotlight are now the Wise Men of the genre, with new faces like Thomas Jack and Kygo representing the Young Turks of the popular movement. Another young face is Bakermat, a 23-year-old Dane with a big sound and risk-taking techniques. His most famous song on Spotify is “One Day”, a track that uses Martin Luther King, Jr’s hallowed words from his “I Have a Dream” speech as a sample.

With an album coming out in 2016, Bakermat will be playing all over the world in preparation for the release. To get familiar with the sound, check out “Teach Me”, his big single from this summer. With a gospel-style vocal complete with a choir-sung chorus, the track is an easy entry point for people uninterested in EDM. While he is tagged frequently with the oddly-specific “instrumental deep house” tag, his obvious pop sensibilities won’t keep him firmly classified for long. Bakermat’s inherent sense of what makes a good deep house song and what makes simply a good song translates into music with serious crossover appeal.

Held at one of San Francisco’s best locations to see burgeoning DJs, this show will be a great opportunity to get acquainted with the upcoming artist, who won’t be under-the-radar for long. You’ll be able to see the EDM movement in all of its raver/hawaiian shirt glory while enjoying a young artist at the top of his game. In the past, Bakermat has opened for house great Moby in New York and cites both Miles Davis and Fatboy Slim as influences, so anyone who hits this show will be sure to see something unique.
