mxdwn PREMIERE: Young Rival Release New Video For “Interior Light”

Three years after Stay Young, Canada’s psych rock darlings Young Rival are back with a brand new video premiering here on mxdwn.

The vintage-inspired imagery for their latest single, “Interior Light,” is a photographer’s trippy dream. They shot the video with an old school 35mm camera, then hand-spliced dozens of photographs, creating a retro look that’s fascinating for any photo buff to watch.

Weirdly enough, the band says their bass player John Smith found the main photographer for “Interior Light” online. That photographer’s name? Jon Smith. Both Smiths used images of a lightbulb being blasted into tiny bits by shotgun shells. The photographer created a camera mechanism that took a photo the second the shotgun was fired, using the results as the centerpiece of the video. Now that’s what I call shooting some film.

As the video cycles through effortlessly charming photographs, the band’s gorgeous, haunting melodies provide the perfect soundtrack. Their harmonies are Beatles-esque, layering on top of one another to create a sound that is both complex and light. Its waterfall-like chord structures make it an ideal backdrop for the last of your warm, summer nights. The guitars jangle, the drums pound an upbeat rhythm and the vocals coo soothing truths about life. Make no mistake, this is psych-garage at its absolute culmination.

“Interior Light” is the title track off of Young Rival’s upcoming release Interior Light, hitting stores on October 16th. The band is already hard at work on an upcoming tour this fall, making appearances across the US and Canada.

The band describes their latest album as a moment to start fresh. Singer/guitarist Aron D’Alesio says,

“It was definitely time for us to have a sitdown together and figure things out. We decided to switch things up. Do things differently. Try something new.”
