Singer-songwriter Chris Cornell, possibly best known as the vocalist for both Soundgarden and Audioslave, has premiered a new music video for his track “Nearly Forgot My Broken Heart,” directed by Jessie Hill.
The track is the first single from Cornell’s upcoming solo album, Higher Truth. Somewhat surprisingly, the song has more of a country twang to it than Cornell’s fans might be used to. This song could not be mistaken for a track from a Soundgarden or Audioslave album. Despite the fact that “Nearly Forgot My Broken Heart” features prominent drums and guitar parts following the first verse, and Cornell’s rock roots cannot be denied, it also contains some acoustic picking and forlorn lyrics that are more reminiscent of the country and western genre.
As for the plot of the visual, it is fittingly set up like an old Western movie starring Cornell and actors Eric Roberts and W. Earl Brown. It also fulfills a sort of “old Western” bingo, with shots of men in a small jail cell, a public gallows where convicted criminals are hanged and plenty of 1800s-era clothing. Cornell will be performing the new song on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon on September 17, just before his album’s release on September 20. Late last year, Cornell collaborated with Velvet Revolver’s Duff McKagan to perform with the surviving members of Seattle’s Mad Season. The artists performed together as part of the annual Sonic Evolution concert that serves to pay homage to the great and influential bands that have shaped the Seattle, and eventually national, music scene.
